2012 Annual Report

Dear Friend,
As I write this letter, the New Year is fast approaching. The end of one year and the beginning of a new year offers a time to reflect on where we have been and where we are going. Like many businesses, Chimes follows a fiscal year, so the end of the calendar year and the business year do not coincide. For Chimes, the New Year represents the middle of its year but it is still a good time to look back and take stock of where we were in the previous year, where we are in the current year, and to begin planning for our next fiscal year which will begin in July 2013.

Enclosed is the Fiscal Year 2012 Annual Report. I hope you will enjoy reading about Donald who joined Chimes 36 years ago and now at 80 years old is embarking on a new beginning in a new, special-built Chimes home in Baltimore. The contributions of people like you provided the seed capital that made his new adventure possible. You will also learn more about Sammy who recently joined Chimes in Delaware. Shortly after coming to us, staff learned that she had a significant health issue that quite possibly contributed to some of her challenges and which required costly treatment. When unable to secure other funding to cover the cost of treatment, Chimes covered the cost of the care without reimbursement. We can do that because you stepped up and made a gift to our Foundation.

We count on you, the contributors and supporters that have made so much possible for Donald and Sammy. Please take time to review the video that is enclosed with the annual report to see how
important your support is to the programs that are vital to Donald, Sammy and many others every day.

As we come to the end of this year and embark on another, please consider making a tax-deductible year-end gift. The size of your gift is not important; your commitment to being part of the future for the people we serve is. On behalf of the more than 17,000 people served, the 3,600 staff members, our Board of Directors and other volunteers, and my own family, I offer sincere best wishes to you and your family for the Holidays and the New Year.

Sincerely,
Martin S. Lampner

2011 Annual Report

Dear Friends,

It has been said that human energy is a priceless commodity.  At Chimes, we respect the importance of managing and utilizing the energy from people and other resources to its fullest effect.  When you think about it, the transfer, management and conservation of energy is the essence of what Chimes does every day.

We transfer the collective energy of our 3,000 staff to the people we serve. In turn, this allows the people we serve to direct their energy towards activities that help them develop skills and fulfill their potential - from participating in activities in the community to holding down a job that affords them meaningful work and fair wages.

In addition to managing human energy to its best effect, for the past decade, Chimes has made a commitment to better manage the energy we use to power the office buildings, work centers and residential facilities out of which we operate.  In the past year, we have taken our most ambitious step yet by constructing and activating a 3,000 panel, 670-kilowatt solar installation at our headquarters in Baltimore City.  Energy experts, elected officials and members of the business community alike have offered praise for this groundbreaking renewable energy initiative.

We are proud to say the past year has been tremendously successful. Chimes continues to experience strong growth in an era of reduced government funding and a challenging economic climate.  The people we serve, our staff, dedicated volunteers and generous supporters have played a large role in our continued success and we’ll look to them for further energy and input as we take on several new forward-thinking ventures in the very near future.

We are directing new energy into expanding the services we provide throughout the mid-Atlantic and Israel.  In the past, Chimes has found that investing energy generates additional energy and growth.  We invite you to invest your energy and support with us as we challenge our donors to fully fund the new Irvin and Phyllis Levin Center through an ambitious $1.65 million capital campaign.  We are confident you are up to the challenge! Learn more about this project on pages 8 and 9 of this report!

While Chimes is excited about the continued growth of our agency, our top priority is to insure this growth is enacted in a fiscally responsible manner to make certain it is sustainable and to set the stage for future growth.

On behalf of everyone at Chimes, I thank you for your interest in and support of the work we do for children, adults and senior citizens with disabilities.

Sincerely,

Marty Lampner
President & CEO

Celebrating the Sister City relationship between Baltimore, Maryland and Ashkelon, Israel

Last Monday night, June 13, Chimes was honored to play host to a Sister City event with the Mayors of Ashkelon and Baltimore. Both Mayors exchanged gifts and spent time with our other guests, people from the Associated, various branches of the Maryland Government, groups with interest in promoting business and community involvement in Israel as well as Chimes staff members. Over 50 people attended the event and had an enjoyable evening in the courtyard at the Intervals Building, 4814 Seton Drive.

Joining us for the event from our Israel staff was Jorge Zimmermann the Executive Director in Israel as well as Esther Sharon, Resource Development Director for Chimes Israel.

To view the brief article and photo spread from the Baltimore Jewish Times, please click on this link Celebrating Sisters.

We were both surprised and pleased that the Mayor of Ashkelon made a commitment to help with creating a better environment for our program in his city during his speech and followed up with us the next day. Today that program exists in a small two story suburban home with a steep flight of stairs and insufficient kitchen and bathroom space to work comfortably with 24 children with special needs. This commitment will allow us to address this need in the future.

We will be following up this event shortly with a follow up letter to both those in attendance and those who were invited but could not join us.  We hope we can get them engaged and willing to help support programs such as the reconstruction of Tiybe’s facility already underway, an expansion to our space in Modiin, and ultimately, creation of better space in Ashkelon.

A trip to Israel is being planned to commemorate Chimes Israel’s 20th anniversary sometime this winter. This trip will be a joint activity with ANCOR; more on that as plans firm up.
